Restoration archival material: parchment
Chromatic reintegration of losses
Description of the process: 20 gr Japan paper previously dyed with Windsor and Newton watercolors, yellow, ocher and tan shade. The union of pieces, cuts and tears, have been resolved by impregnating the edges to be joined with white glue and Tylose®. The shape of the parchment loss is traced with a sharp and clean object, such as a scalpel, and 4-5 mm more width is left. The edges are glued with white glue and the paper is adhered to the parchment on the reverse side. This paper is dyed a dark color since another layer of paper with the exact shape of the loss will go over that graft, over the previous one and of a lighter color, this paper will be of a lower grammage and more transparent. Adheres to other paper with Tylose®. This will create a thickness ratio similar to that of parchment and resulting in a color similar to the lighter side of the document, for aesthetic purposes.
Preventive conservation
Parchment is a hygroscopic material that absorbs water easily and requires constant relative humidity and temperature conditions. Thus avoiding the contraction of the material, the appearance of wrinkles or the loss of the inks adhered to this support.
Follow-up after treatment is recommended. Keep the parchment in stable conditions, protected, and with weights that protect it from deformation. Temperature 16º C and 21º C and RH between 40% and 60%. The changes that are made must be light and gradual, never subjecting the material to a sudden change in the environment that surrounds it. The light should be as low as possible, not exceeding 50 lux.
Handling conditions
Handling: with cotton gloves, as long as it rests on a support protected by blotters.
Packaging / Protection material: store in a place with as little light as possible, sheltered, in Reemay® and Melinex ® covers, with weights avoiding contact with moisture, use of neutral materials.
